2012 Youth Power Energy Camp Contest

Heads up, Texoma 8th Graders!

You could win a trip to Youth Power Energy Camp next summer!

Each year, SWRE joins the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives to sponsor the Youth Power Energy Camp near Red Rock Canyon, located east of Hinton, Oklahoma. The camp, slated for late May (beginning the day after Memorial Day, when most schools have been dismissed for the summer), is designed to help students develop leadership skills while having lots of fun!

By forming their own cooperative business, camp participants will learn about leadership and business while interacting with other 8th graders from across the state. Campers will also have the opportunity to learn about generating and distributing electricity by touring the electric generation facilities at Western Farmers Electric Cooperative in Anadarko and the offices of Caddo Electric Cooperative in Binger. Linemen will put on safety demonstrations and students will even get a chance to try their hand at riding bucket trucks and climbing poles!

And that's not all! Campers will start the summer out right by making new friends and taking part in a variety of activities including volleyball, swimming, ping pong, hiking, and a special “surprise” outing.

The Contest

To compete for a chance to attend the 2012 Energy camp, 8th graders must submit an essay on a specified energy-related topic.

IThe essay must be 350-500 words in length. Essays will be judged on content, style and accuracy. Essays may be typewritten or written in blue or black ink.

Two students (one Texas student and one Oklahoma student) will be selected from submitted essays to represent Southwest Rural Electric at the 2012 Energy Camp. SWRE will cover all expenses relating to the camp, including transportation to and from Red Rock Canyon.

The winners and other contest finalists will receive $50.

Deadline for essays to be received at SWRE will be in February 2012 (date to be announced).

Essay contest forms and packet information will be distributed to area schools this fall. The material will also available on request from the SWRE Communications Office (1-800-256-7973).
